How Many Bowls? Show date set!

We're not sure whether to call it an art show, a reunion or a party, but we've set the date for the project's big blow out.  We happy to announce that How Many Bowls? will happen November 19th and 20th.  We've been offered space in a wonderful gallery right here in Highlandtown.  We'll be sending out details to all of the bowl turners (there are 38 of us!) early in September with directions on getting your bowl ready for the show.  So, mark your calendars for November 19th & 20th ,set your GPS for Schiavone Fine Art, 244 S. Highland Ave. Baltimore, MD  21224.

Trudy's Bowl #86

Trudy just sent this great photo of the finished Bowl #86  alongside a hand carved spoon.  Did  you also make the spoon, Trudy?  I found this video of Trudy working on the bowl (it was her first) in last fall's bowl making class.  So, here we have Trudy's first bowl followed my first attempt to load a video onto the blog.

Three Bowls Visit St. Paul, MN for the AAW Symposium

Mark and Nancy just returned from St. Paul where they attended the annual American Association of Woodturners Symposium .  They took Bowl #36, #10 and #91 along with them.  They were in good company in the Instant Gallery along with hundreds of other woodturnings from woodturning club members from around the country.

Alex turned Bowl #92 in our June Bowl Turning class.  Some of these final pieces have plenty of insect damage, we just call it 'character'.  Look forward to seeing the finished bowl, Alex.  Hope you'll send along a photo. 

California Woodturner, Jerry Kermode joins our project

During Jerry's visit to Baltimore in February of 2011, our California woodturning friend agreed to take a pine bowl blank back to California.  We can't wait to see Bowl #89 from this great teacher and turner.  Here's a photo of Jerry teaching bowl turning to a small group of lucky students in Baltimore last winter.  Visit his website to see some of his outstanding work.  Jerry Kermode Woodturning

Bob Presents Bowl #41

What a beauty!  As you can see,  Bob is no beginner.  He's an experienced turner and active member of the Baltimore Area Turners.  He turned this bowl (vessel might be a better word for it) at the bowl turning party on that very hot day in July (see Aug 1, 2010 blog post).   #41 has some very distinctive red markings in the wood that according to Bob, "give the bowl some character".  Thanks for the photo Bob.  For more information about the Baltimore Area Turners and other woodturning clubs in the area, visit the Links Page on our website or the American Association of Woodturning website.
